ToggleAs we all know, there are mainly five types of skin: Dry, Normal, Oily, Combination, and Sensitive. People like us, who have very oily skin, have many questions about their skin. Among them, the common question is, which moisturizer is good for oily skin? Even after getting this answer, more questions remain in mind. One of them is, will this moisturizer suit my skin? Thousands of such questions go around in our minds, right?
“That girl has oily skin, she uses such a moisturizer. The moisturizer worked well on her skin. So it will be good for my skin too. So I buy the moisturizer.”
My skin type is oily too. And I have done this stupidity several times in my life. And the result is zero. And I got a pimple as a gift. And I know many people like me are facing this problem with their skin, so how to select the perfect moisturizer for oily skin, let’s know.
Oily Skin Needs Moisturizer?
Many of us think that since oily skin produces more oil, there is no need to use a moisturizer. But this idea is completely wrong. Oil and moisture are two different things! Oily skin occurs due to the excess secretion of sebum from the sebaceous glands of the skin. Sebum is an oil-like substance that protects the skin from external damage and keeps the skin healthy. But for healthy skin, besides sebum production, it is necessary to maintain skin moisture. So even if the skin type is oily, moisturizer should be used to maintain the water level or hydration of the skin.
Another function of moisturizer is to balance the skin’s natural oils. Even if the skin is oily, it often becomes dehydrated. So applying moisturizer to oily skin is a must.
How to Understand Your Oily Skin:
Well! To know which moisturizer is better, you should test if your skin type is oily or not at first. Now I will talk about how to test it. So let’s find out:
1. After waking up in the morning, touch your face with your hands before cleaning your facial skin. If the whole face feels oily, then you know your skin type is oily.
2. You can do another test to understand whether your skin is oily or not. After cleaning the face with face wash, do not apply any toner or moisturizer on the face for 3-4 hours. After 3-4 hours, take a blotting paper or tissue paper. Then gently press it on the face. If you see that more or less oil has come out on the blotting paper after pressing each part of the face, then you will understand your skin type is oily.
I repeat, check the entire face for oiliness, not just the ‘T-Zone.’ Because if you see oil only in the T-zone, you have to understand that your skin is combination skin.
How to Choose the Perfect Moisturizer for Oily Skin:
Since oily skin tends to have more problems than other skin types (such as open pores, pimples, acne, or oiliness), selecting products for this type of skin is quite difficult! So, what should be considered while choosing a moisturizer for oily skin? Let’s know:
Moisturizer Ingredients
1. For oily skin, choose water-based products instead of oil-based products. It will reduce the oiliness of the skin. Water-based products primarily contain hyaluronic acid, which helps reduce oiliness and keeps skin hydrated.
2. Oily skin can use products containing lactic acid and salicylic acid. Salicylic acid reduces acne as well as oil control.
3. For oily skin, you can use a moisturizer with dimethicone instead of wax or petroleum-based products. Dimethicone is a silicone-based skin protectant that, when used in moderation in skincare products, keeps the skin soft and moisturized.
4. Oily skin can avoid moisturizers containing paraffin and cocoa butter. Because the use of products containing paraffin and cocoa butter makes the skin more oily, clogs the pores, and increases the chances of acne.
5. Since open pores are slightly more visible in oily skin, oily skin care should use a moisturizer that will not clog the pores and cause pimples or acne on the skin.
6. For oily skin, opt for a gel-based moisturizer with a light texture rather than a creamy or heavy lotion-type moisturizer. Because heavy cream with a buttery texture may cause sweating if applied during summer. They are not suitable, especially for oily skin.
7. Glycolic acid as an ingredient is known as a ‘powerhouse’ for oily skin. If you want, you can use a moisturizer with glycolic acid to care for your oily skin. It reduces the skin’s overproduction of oil, prevents clogging of pores, and protects the skin from breakouts when combined with a moisturizer.
Check the Product Type:
If you have problems with acne or pimples, you can choose a moisturizer that will help reduce acne problems and won’t clog pores. That’s why you should check if the product you are using for your skin is formulated for acne-prone skin.
Moisturizers with SPF can be used during the day. Nighttime skincare should include a nourishing moisturizer or night cream. However, sunscreen should be applied separately during the day. Because the day cream does not have enough SPF!
Things to Keep in Mind Before Buying a Moisturizer for Oily Skin:
The moisturizer should be lightweight and contain SPF. For oily skin, always avoid oil-based, thick, and creamy types of moisturizers. Try using a gel or light lotion-based moisturizer. To avoid allergies or rashes, before buying the moisturizer, you can test it on your hands and then buy it, especially if you have sensitivity issues.
Moisturizer by Season
1. Cream-Based Moisturizer:
A heavy cream-based moisturizer should be used in winter, which contains skin nourishing elements. It keeps the skin good even in dry weather.
2. Gel-Based Moisturizer:
A water or gel-based light moisturizer should be used during summer. Because it blends easily into the skin and doesn’t leave an oily feeling. As a result, there is no problem of sweating even if you go out.
Moisturizers by Age
1. If you are a teenager, use a moisturizer that protects against acne and keeps the skin hydrated for a long time. Also, its texture should be very light.
2. Use an anti-aging moisturizer on mature skin, which will prevent wrinkles while retaining skin moisture.
